George Gershwin: An American in Paris Posters
George Gershwin’s piece An American in Paris is inspired by his series of trips to Paris in the 1920’s to 1930’s which he recounts the bustling liveliness of the city. The music is filled with swinging movements and honking horns all of which attempt to capture the positivity and opportunity that Gershwin felt while in the city. To capture the hoppy, bustling, and complex movements of the music and the realities of Paris during the 20’s, both posters use a color palette inspired by Wassily Kandinsky’s paintings filled with energy and take inspiration from art deco to inform typography choice and composition. Curvilinear lines work to capture the slower, flowing moments, which paired with the typography weaving in and out of the forms create the feeling of traversing through the bustling of the city in awe of a new landscape.
