Hey! I’m Sean, a graphic designer and lifelong Philadelphian. I’m a person of many interests, from board games to hockey to drawing. In my free time, I like to play chess or relax with a meal and an indie movie.

64: A Book of Chess Openings and Players

64 is book about chess openings and players, made to make the game less intimidating to study. The majority of the book’s design focuses on varying grid systems, given the importance of the grid in chess. Many spreads feature collaged typography to simulate the movements of pieces across the board. Spreads outside of the primary collages feature layouts of diagrams and type that still reflect these same movements. White space and spreads with rigid column systems provide a reprieve from the otherwise dynamic designs.

7.6 Magazine

The concept of this magazine was to focus on the impact that we, as the human race, have on the planet. This particular issue focuses on drought. I used a variety of heavily textured images to convey a sense of lifelessness in the land. With the loss of wheat being important to the article’s argument, I created a “wheat fossil” for the table of contents and I used the motif of bread clips as a symbol for the loss of a major food source.

Corita Kent: The Pop Artist Nun

Corita Kent was a screen printer, pop artist, and nun, known widely for her use of typography. My own type within the book references her through the irreverent breaking of words and by varying paragraph widths. A large number of fonts are also used throughout the book to again reflect Kent’s work which featured everything from extreme slab serifs to contemporary sans-serifs. I also created a graphic system that allowed her work to bleed out of its frame to let it truly take over and influence the composition.
